Lorcaserin (also known as Belviq) is a prescription weight loss drug that hit the medical scene recently and has been recommended for approval by the FDA Advisory Panel (Food and Drug Administration).
The FDA Panel voted 18-4 in recommending Lorcaserin / Belviq stating that Lorcaserin’s benefits “outweigh the potential risks when used long term” in overweight and obese people.
Lorcaserin is developed by Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. It’s an appetite suppressant (anorectic) and ultimately causes weight loss because the user has decreased appetite when the drug is used.
However, Lorcaserin (Belviq) is in no way a new prescription weight loss drug. It was presented to the FDA panel for approval as a prescription weight loss drug but there were some serious health concerns that led the FDA advisory panel to vote against and reject Lorcaserin FDA approval back in 2010. The FDA was firm on its decision then due to those same health concerns.
So why the sudden turnaround after that time?
After careful deliberation the drug was recommended with patient monitoring and several other restrictions: Only patients battling type-2 diabetes and have high blood pressure as well as those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30.
It goes without saying that like Qnexa (another prescription weight loss drug at the verge of FDA approval), this drug is a godsend for all those people that are battling obesity and other weight problems but still comes with its own share of problems.
The prescription weight loss drug Lorcaserin is purely meant for those people that are fighting with obesity and struggling with losing weight.
Lorcaserin / Belviq: FDA Approval 2012
This year, the FDA panel voted to recommend Lorcaserin for prescription weight loss as long as certain restrictions are in place and patients taking this prescription weight loss drug are monitored.
Restrictions are similar to Qnexa which require a BMI of patients that are again, over 30 (over 27 BMI if patients have dangerously high blood pressure or already have type 2 diabetes). The FDA will make its final decision on their approval of Lorcaserin come June 27th, 2012 (read the update below).
Keep in mind that the FDA has not approved a obesity weight loss drug in over 10 years now due to the major negative side effects associated with these prescription drugs. They can be dangerous if sold over-the-counter because buyers may not pay attention to all the details surrounding them. That is why they remain prescription and can only be prescribed through your doctor who has already done an assessment pertaining to your condition.
Over the years excess weight has been known to be a huge problem in America and across the world as well. Obesity is becoming an increasing issue as the sugar intake has increased across the nation since the 1970s (soda, ice cream, cakes, pies, candy, etc.)
Lorcaserin is for all those people who have been looking for other options to weight loss other than opting for gastric bypass surgery and/or other weight loss methods whose effects they’ll have to live with for the rest of their lives.
Lorcaserin / Belviq: 1st Weight Loss Drug to Receive FDA Approval In 10 Years
The FDA has approved the anti-obesity drug Lorcaserin, which is the generic name for Belviq. Quite surprising as the Food and Drug Administration HAS NOT approved an anti-obesity drug in over 10 years time.
Even with the negative side effects (as noted below) from taking Lorcaserin the FDA still believes (to our surprise) that Lorcaserin is still safe enough to prescribe to patients for weight loss.
Belviq / Lorcaserin was originally rejected by the FDA just 2 years ago due to the negative side effects and the potential for developing tumors.
The staff here at nRXHealth DO NOT agree with FDA’s approval of Lorcaserin / Belviq or even the possible approval of anti-obesity prescription drug Qnexa which may be approved in the coming months this year. We believe that patients are taking too much risk just to lose weight with any type of anti-obesity prescription weight loss drug. There isn’t a magic pill where you can take it without doing anything else and lose weight with no risks.
There are weight loss products that can complement a healthier lifestyle (like PhenTabz) but absolutely nothing to replace the foundation of having healthier eating habits and routine weekly exercise activity. Everyone is looking and waiting for this magic drug but there isn’t one.
Also keep in mind that even with FDA approvals of drugs they still pull them off the market if negative outcomes start to arise as with the Fen-Phen, Accutrim, Meridia etc. from connections to heart valve disease, heart attacks, strokes. In the end the public ends up being guinea pigs to determine if the FDA approval holds any weight or not.
“It’s about time that they approved a new drug,” as noted by Dr. Judith Stern, who is a Professor of Nutrition at UC Davis. “Obesity drugs should be on the fast track.”
Our response: Yes, we understand that the obesity epidemic is on the rise and will continue to rise but rushing the approvals of more anti-obesity, prescription weight loss drugs is just asking for widespread disaster with severe repercussions as these weight loss pills make their way into the population under the guise of an “FDA Approval” which people see as a “Seal of Approval” for safety.
Healthier eating habits need to be developed slowly through learning and at home along with fun, enjoyable weekly physical activity for the long term.
We’re talking about long term, healthy and enjoyable lifestyles and not short term, overnight starvation fad diets or magic diet pills.
We recommend that PhenTabz compliments a sensible and healthier diet and moderate exercise which is your foundation. PhenTabz will help you achieve your weight loss goals much faster and without the negative side effects that Lorcaserin / Belviq / Qnexa bring.
Possible Side Effects To Keep In Mind
Before even considering asking your doctor about these prescription weight loss pills you need to consider the side effects. Sometimes there is so much hype surrounding new prescription weight loss drugs that people end up overlooking the dangers of them.
Some Lorcaserin side effects include:
- Headaches: During the trial days of this drug, patients who consumed it and were placed under doctor’s observation are said to have experienced headaches after the usage.
- Nausea / Dizziness: Patients are also expected to experience nausea during the dosage.
- Common cold / Nasopharyngitis: Upper respiratory tract Infection
- Depression / Suicidal thoughts: Suicidal thoughts and depression were side effects that occurred while taking Lorcaserin but they were not reported in a high frequency during the initial drug research. Just keep in mind that they did show up in some patients taking the drug.
- Risk of developing tumors: During testing with Lorcaserin, laboratory animals (rats) began to develop tumors. Arena has stated that tumor development risk is negligible in humans.
In as much as this drug is a godsend to people that looking for a weight loss solution you will definitely need to weigh the risk vs the reward and ask yourself if taking Belviq / Lorcaserin is worth the weight loss. Being approved by the FDA does not mean that it is the best weight loss solution.
Your Reward: Weight Loss of a little over 5% body weight in one year (100lbs = 5lbs or 200lbs = 10lbs body weight lost). DOES NOT look like incredible weight loss results from taking it when weighing the benefits and drawbacks. But for those who are extremely overweight any weight loss is beneficial.
Your Risk: Lorcaserin Side Effects Risk (nausea, dizziness, common cold), Reactions to the Drug (depression / suicidal thoughts risk), possible risk of cancer, etc.
A drug similar to this one known as Dexfenfluramine was ruled out of the market due to the fact that it caused cardiovascular side effects, where patients might suffer from conditions that affects their heart.
Several other prescription weight loss pills / anti-obesity drugs have been known to cause similar reactions (Phentermine, Qnexa) so it is vital to know exactly what you are taking even when your physician is recommending it and prescribing it to you.
